UF geeks are teh rulerz

Seriously, you've got to click over to this, and then watch the video.

And we did it in jortz to boot.
DESTRUCTOID - Hardcore Video Game Blog! ? Blog Archive ? UF: The University of xbox Flash mobbers!: "Destructoid reader Sal “The Man in the Orange Hat” Picataggio (founder of Flashmob UF) organized 100 UF students to redo the banned Xbox Flash Mob commercial right in the middle of the UF campus. Or as my girlfriend put it (whom, in line with the prophecy, also happens to be a Gator) “OMG!!! TURLINGTON PLAZA; THAT’S WHERE ALL THE CRAZY SHIT HAPPENS!” Indeed. She then also added “by the way, our kids are going there.” They sure do work that into every conversation now, don’t they? Anyway, you have to see this video!!!

Letters to the editor:

First off, I like the blog a LOT. I’ve been reading joystiq for a while, but you guys have nearly the same info and you’re loads more entertaining to read. I think you guys will get a kick out of this video of Flashmob UF’s most recent flash mob. I saw the video of the banned XBox ad (I’m sure you are familiar) and instantly yearned to bring it to my flash mobbers. Using our now 600 member group I organized it’s execution: show up to the busiest area on campus at the busiest time of day, and suddenly draw your guns! Here is the over 100-person result:

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE GUY WITH THE ORANGE HAT!
"

EDSBS cites yours truly

Hey, my favorite bloggers have used a suggestion from me. So honored, i'm going to go buy some Gator Championship Jean Shorts (aka Jorts). Jump the link and go watch the similarities between all-world future Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen and all-world former balladeer Peter Cetera.

EDSBS ? CLAUSEN: A MAN WHO WILL FI-HIGHT FOR YOUR HONOR: "CLAUSEN: A MAN WHO WILL FI-HIGHT FOR YOUR HONOR

Sure, everyone’s got their guesses on the “Separated at Birth” conundrum that is Jimmy Clausen. And while House Rock Built comes damn close, reader Miguel deserves credit for a whale of a grab from the memory banks:

And…

further listening - Delays: Faded Seaside Glamour (2004): Reviews

If you're visting Again!Again! and you're not going over to my music blog, you're making a serious mistake.

Go to AgainAgainMixCD.blogspot.com for your Miguel MixCD.

This post is aboutTrack 15 on the first AgainAgain cd: Delays - "Waste of Space".

Ben says, "It's depressing." But only if you listen to the lyrics. If you just listen to Greg Gilbert's soaring voice, Delays vary between Liz Frazer of the Cocteau Twins and The La's Lee Mavers.

You'll remember The La's from their amazing "There She Goes", which Sixpence None the Richer turned into a tampon commercial. (I've got nothing against tampon commercials per se; it's the awfully bland 'feminine white puffy sheet' soundtracks that irk the hell out of me. /rant)

Speaking of sacharine commercials, 'Long" time coming' by Delays was used in a diamond council 'get married all over again' spot recently. Don't get me wrong - the song's fantastic, all 60's Merseyside beats and harmonies - but I'm ambivalent on the use of the song in this commercial- it's neither featured nor really made cool. Just kinda there. I guess I'd really only blanche if the song becomes dinner party music for the couple featured in the commercial. Or, even worse, for their parents.

But the gem of their first CD is 'Hey girl'. Again, it's brimming with Merseyside joy, but this time singer Greg Gilbert (he's got to do something about that name. Greg Gilbert is a guy in accunts receivable, not someone's whose voice soars like this) lays on the falsetto. This is where the Liz Frazier comparisons come in.

It's gorgeous, it's fantastic, it's the sound of a crush revealed.
Go ahead and download it now, here: 'Hey" girl' by Delays. And the 'Long Time Coming' link above is the mp3 of said song, too.

Hollywood sign

From Hollywood sign history

Originally erected in 1923 at a cost of $21,000 for the purpose of advertising a real estate development, the Hollywood Sign has since become a symbol recognized worldwide as synonymous with the birthplace of today's global entertainment industry.

I might have a brain cloud

First, Wendy emails me saying that she might have a brain cloud.

Then the boys at EDSBS reference it.

Is there some ground swell of Joe v. Volcano (side note: sounds like a Hawaii sovereignity Supreme Court case from 1954) fandom? Is TNT running the fuck out of it on hungover Saturday afternoons?

Is there a nefarious scientology connection or is this work of Karl Rove?

Someone please explain.

again! again! stats, Sunday 4/23, St. Jordi's day

k8 was here all weekend. it was fun. we both talked about what a mess we both are, and how we might change that. i voted for her being the one that changes.

operative quote: 'like two trainwrecks passing in the night.'

On that note, today's stats:

Current listen: Love Generation by Bob Sinclar f. Gary Pine.
Free food recently: free beers from Rich & Jeff on Thursday.
Jarrod diet status: None the past 4 days.
Sleep: eh
Drugs: None.
Back: OK
Effort: k8 made me go out dancing on Thursday night. that turned out good. So, call it a 7.
Engagement: 6 i.e. better. k8 and i chatted about a whole boatload of problems. like therapy, but much, much, much cheaper. ran into some friends on Saturday and had a really, really good time and interesting conversation.
Poker games with k8 physically in the house: 7
Money won: $106
Poker games since k8 left: 8
Money lost: $66.
Number of those games where I got knocked out on bad beats: 5
Approximate swing in $ if I'd won 4 of those hands: +$99
Sound: Aarggh.

Loneliness: Not bad. Having k8 here was good, if the previous stats didn't reveal that. Think that tomorrow I'll go into a little social withdrawal.

Newness: Observed the making of cornbread in my kitchen, for the very first time.

Fun:7. Especially Thursday night at Funky-in-the-Middle.

Long-term Forecast: slightly improved.

Brutally truthful answer to 'How you doin?': Good. A little dispassionate, or perhaps tired.

Things I'm looking forward to:
tomorrow: working out and getting my new pants hemmed. they're hot Zara pants. yaow!
this week: Kevin's birthday dinner. possibly getting the Wells Fargo stuff on Adcritic.
next weekend: Apartment Coachella (like the real thing, but at my house - details to come) and the NFL draft.
in the coming month: more mp3 goodness. the sun.

Peace.

How the GOP Lost Its Way

Interesting...

How the GOP Lost Its Way: "How the GOP Lost Its Way
By Craig Shirley
Saturday, April 22, 2006; Page A21
The immigration reform debate has highlighted a long-standing fissure in the GOP between the elitist Rockefeller business wing and the party's conservative populist base. Whether the two groups can continue to coexist and preserve the Republican majority is increasingly doubtful as conservatives begin to consider -- and in some cases cheer -- the possibility that the GOP may lose control of Congress this fall."

April 19, 2006 Issue 42 16
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - In response to the shit he knows everyone is saying about him, local resident Todd Stenerud, after a prolonged drinking session, announced his intention to show you and everyone else just minutes before closing time at a local bar Monday.

Stenerud denounces the 'total bullshit' he has endured from people.'You people don't know [what] the fuck you're talking about,' Stenerud announced from his stool at Dan's Pub. 'You think I can't? Know what? I'll show you. I'll show everybody.'"

What sexy women do to men's thinking skills. By William?Saletan

Original article from the BBC.

What sexy women do to men's thinking skills. By William?Saletan: "Sexual images subvert young men's ability to think. In a money game, men who were shown pictures of lingerie or sexy women accepted disadvantageous deals more often than did men who were shown nonsexual pictures. Men with higher testosterone levels, inferred from ring fingers that were long relative to their index fingers, did worse on the test. Interpretations: 1) Duh. 2) This is what evolution designed men to do. 3) Nevertheless, we can struggle to overcome it. 4) Researchers are having trouble finding images that mess up women the same way. What does that tell you? (For Human Nature's take on male-female differences in a punishment game, click here.)"

Further...

"The researchers are conducting similar tests with women. But so far, they have failed to find a visual stimulus which will affect their behaviour."

Again! Again! MixCD! MixCD!

Again! Again! MixCD! MixCD!: "Again! again!: 04/01/2006 - 04/30/2006

'again! again!: stats - Wednesday, April 19th.

This is my 1994 crush's birthday. Hi Lara Waldrop, if you're googling yourself. I don't know this because I'm obsessive, but sadly, rather because this is also the 12th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing.

That day, I was living in Columbia, S.C. I went home to change before I went to play volleyball and turned on Headline News. Sad. At that time, no one had the Internet, and so news didn't spread that fast. I think only 1 person at the court knew about the disaster.

On that note, today's stats:

Current listen: songs that mean something to me, that make me feel at least a little bit alive.

Free food today: none. that gravy train done left the station.

Jarrod diet status: 1 Subway visit past 3 days, no walking.

Sleep: eh

Drugs: I took a full 20 pills between last wednesday and saturday. i recognize this is a Big problem. i'm negotiating with James Frey's agent right now for book rights. question: if I can't remember and make it up, is it fiction or non-fiction?

Back: OK
Effort: besides the hangovers and sleeping pills? not so bad
Engagement: so-so. cried today at the Ken Kaess thing. loved my city visit last week. loved soul brunch. see above for my opt-out of 24 hours of reality with sleeping pills.
Loneliness: Not as bad. SF, no remembrance of thu/fri/sat, soul brunch sunday. ah - who am i kidding? it's crushing.
Newness: My first pedicure last night. Thanks plum.
Fun:3
Long-term Forecast: holding steady. like New Orleans 10 days after Katrina.
Brutally truthful answer to 'How you doin?': addicted to sleeping pills. unable to move past my issues. looking forward to commiserating with k8.
The only even prime number: 2. still.

Items knocked off (financial) to-do list: paid taxes, paid car repair. added a trip to Portland for July 4.
Current read: nope
Thing I'm most excited about tomorrow: k8. and showing our military banking Wells Fargo ads. '"

YouTube - Jim Valvano ESPY Speech

YouTube - Jim Valvano ESPY Speech

On a night of rememberance and tearjerker speeches, YouTube proves it's worth.

Here's the difference between Valvano speaking, and all of Ken Kaess' friends speaking:

In so many of these eulogies/inspirational talks, the lesson is coming from a great person, and made better or deeper or stronger by the advancing too-early tragic death.

And I'm left thinking: ok if I'm ever President/ceo/or whatever i might be abe to take advantage of what you got to say.

But! What if i'm kind of a shithead drunk with a prescription pill addiction that's rapidly becomeing an alcoholic. What, then, could a fuckup like me take from this phenom-achiever-gladhander-instantfriendsmaker's life?

Squat. Says the Iowa & NH caucauses of my mind.

Tonight, those tough minded internal prosecutors get overruled.

It was tough, to see my friends' love for this guy. Worse yet to feel their grief. Post-speech and post-heartbreatking video ala Philadelphia, more orderves(sp, i know), but everyone seemed to have snuck out.

Oh, where was I. the great thing about the Ken guy was that it seemed like anyone could do just a little thing to honor him nOOHNoOne was going to be Ken or accomplish Ken like things. but we could still all do better.

Again, how are you doing?

lemme know. i'd really like to know.

A question

I was just at a memorial service, here at my office, for the former president of our LA branch, who became the worldwide CEO. I never knew him. apparently he was a very interesting, warm, amazing person.

5 or 6 people gave speeches about him. heartbreaking. seems like everyone was his best friend. or actually, that he was everybody's best friend.

the thing, i think, that I'll take away from it is this: everyone that talked about him said that he always asked how they were doing. and really meant it. a lot of times, I mean it as a synonym for 'hello'. so, when I ask in the near future, I'm planning on meaning it.

it was strange having all of these ad execs here in semi-formal wear. not quite Sopranos funeral wear, but definitely not casually dressed. i'm wearing jeans and a brown Polyphonic Spree shirt. i don't think it really mattered to the people that attended.

but, i felt self-conscious, and then I realized that if any shirt I could wear was a celebration of life or someone's life, this was one of them. they tap into an emotive core I love.

so, how are you doing?

you can post in comments or email. i'd like to hear from you.

DDB CEO Kaess Dies at 51

They're having a memorial happy hour, for lack of a better description, for DDB's former CEO. He was the President of the office here before moving up.

Apparently, he was verrrry well liked. Not a shit in a suit at all.

So, my CD and I were talking. He's Irish and wants a wake. I'm a... well, I'm me. And I'd like to state unequivocably for the record that I would like a Roast if I were to die young. Not planning on that at all, but you never know.

Be wonderful out there.
m

DDB CEO Kaess Dies at 51: "NEW YORK DDB worldwide CEO and president Ken Kaess, who spent 20 years at DDB and rose to CEO in 2001, died Monday of cancer at his family's home in Westport, Conn. He was 51.

'Like all of you, I will miss him very much,' wrote Omnicom Group CEO John Wren, in a memo that DDB shared with its employees. 'He was the driver behind DDB's success these last five years and, of course, I will miss him in that role. But I also will miss his friendship and positive spirit.'"

Lion's Sexy Secret: It's in the Mane - Yahoo! News: "Sat Apr 15, 8:00 AM ET

Given the choice, a female lion is more likely to be attracted to a shaggy male from Chicago than a well-groomed guy from Houston.

Chicago lions simply got more game.
Scientists measured the size and fullness of lions' manes in northern and southern zoos and found that cats living in colder climates had heartier hairstyles, a key attractant to female lions."

MSN Hotmail - Message

Further proof of my Slow Descent into Alcoholism. I emailed the rep for Deschuttes Brewing, makers of Black Butte Porter.

Even better, they emailed me back, in a rather detailed and good message.

"Thanks for your interest in our brews, and thank you for taking the time to contact us. We've been in the Southern Californian market for about 2 months now. Slowly but surely we're gaining a great deal of momentum. Within the Santa Monica Area you can find us at these bars, Father's Office (Black Butte Porter draft), Ocean Ave Seafood (Black Butte Porter draft), BOA (Mirror Pond Pale Ale btls), Hooter's (Black Butte Porter draft), Barney's Beanery (Black Butte Porter btls), The Daily Pint (Black Butte Porter draft).

Here are some other accounts around LA, Westwood Brew Company (Black Butte, and Mirror Pond draft), Myogi's (Black Butte Porter draft), Barney's Beanery West Hollywood (Mirror Pond draft, Black Butte btls).

If you'd like directions to any of these accounts, or any further information let me know.

How did you become familiar with our brands? Are you from the North West?

I will be having a tasting at, The Wine Store on May 2end. We will be including about 8 of our beers which are not available in this market, if your interested let me know and I'll forward you the info.

Thanks again,

Timing belt

Fuck! I am so screwed! I will have to rerereredouble my poker efforts. 6 more weekends like this past one, and I'll have paid for it.

Seriously though, fuck.

Timing belt: "On an interference engine, if the timing belt slips even one notch, the piston can crash into an open valve causing serious engine damage by bending valves and breaking pistons. Non-interference engines will usually not self destruct, but in either case if the belt fails, the engine will immediately shut down leaving you stranded. The link at the bottom of this article will tell you which category your engine falls under.

Timing belts fail without warning and on some vehicles, are almost as hard to check as they are to change. In most cases, your only protection is to change the belt at the recommended intervals. Timing belt replacement is not a cheap job but it is far less costly than the alternative.

Some technicians may recommend that you replace the water pump during a timing belt job even if there is nothing wrong with it. This is because 90% of the labor to change the water pump has already been done with the timing belt job and some technicians consider it good insurance to replace the pump at this time. My feeling is that some water pumps can last the life of the car but many do fail and will cost big money to replace at a later date. So ask your technician what his experience is with the water pump on your model car and look at how long you plan to keep the car. This way, at least you will be making an informed roll of the dice."

At first glance, the video looks like a typical 30-second car commercial: a shiny sport utility vehicle careers down a country road lined with sunflower fields, jaunty music playing in the background.

All Podcasts Then, white lettering appears on the screen: '$70 to fill up the tank, which will last less than 400 miles. Chevy Tahoe.'

The commercial is the product of one of the advertising industry's latest trends: user-generated advertising. On March 13, Chevrolet introduced a Web site allowing visitors to take existing video clips and music, insert their own words and create a customized 30-second commercial for the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe. EDSBS blogs me in celebratory mood

EDSBS: "Welcome back! Now that you've hopefully scrubbed that image from your brain with some steel wool or a couple of brimming glasses of Windex, the question from reader Miguel asks:
can you post and let us try to explain how this (non-football) title feels like?
i'm very confused.
like my daughter turning out gay but marrying Angelina Jolie?
Miguel's on the right track here with the Jolie metaphor. We don't know if we can put it better, really, since our interest level in basketball compares favorably to our interest in the ESPN Outdoor Games. (Except for the hot saw competition, which matches up log versus man holding chainsaw powered by a snowmobile engine. That's still completely badass. The dogs jumping off the dock for distance aren't bad, either, though one of these days we'd love to see a mastiff just try to compete. It?d be a big step forward for?um?mastiffs.)

Someone clearly needs to break the mastiff barrier in competitive dog jumping.

As a non-brander and a football fan who attended one b-ball game in their entire term as an undergraduate at the University of Florida this feels…not bad. (That game featured Dimitri Hill, who capped the evening by eating Lon Kruger’s left arm. This qualified as “restraint” for the man known as “The Meat Hook.”) Like when your wife insists on doing something girly for you, like buying you a manicure or insisting that you use soap when you bathe. It’s pleasant enough. But as far as satisfying the bunker-dwelling beast of football lust in your soul, it’s like any of the following.
–a hand job when you need sex.
–Cheez-puffs when you need Chee-tos (Hi Phil!)
–Rutgers versus West Virginia in local coverage when Texas/Oklahoma is on. (Actually happened in 2005 on ABC in the 404. May God damn you all.)
–Miller Lite when you could use a martini
–Allowing your niece or nephew to pick a song on the radio, landing on “S.O.S.” by Rhianna, and finding yourself singing along with a three year-old and a toss-off British pop star."

We were just talking about the 5:30 pm start time and 6:21 tip-off.

Here's what you'll hear, "Blah blah blah UCLA blah blah blah John Wooden blah blah blah 11 titles. Blah blah blah THROW IT DOWN BIG MAN. Blah blah blah Lew Alcindor."

"Blah blah blah French tennis star. Blah blah blah Billy the Kid. (With accompanying Eddie Munster starter kit Providence era shot.) Blah blah blah winnner blah blah tempo. Blah, blah, blah."

again! again!: stats - Sunday, April 2

It's 2 days after April Fools, if the post below scared the bejeesus out of you.

again! again!: stats - Thursday, March 16th: "'Today's stats brought to you by French popstar/former tennis star Yannick Noah, and his current badass motherfucker basketball star sun, Joakim Noah. Go Gators!

Current listen: crappy pop song's bass, from my downstairs neighbor's stereo.

Free food today: cajun chicken sandwich, 2 hef's, courtesy of Shreejana.

Sleep:good lately
Drugs: nope. no narcotic sleeping pills for 3 weeks.
Back: OK
Effort: so-so
Engagement: so-so. this final 2% of editing.
Loneliness: Not as bad. An ex wants to visit. V, came over the other day, and lunch with Shree was nice.
Newness: 0.
Fun:1
Long-term Forecast: slightly better, still eh
Brutally truthful answer to 'How you doin?': a little bloated.
The only even prime number: 2.

Items knocked off to-do list - not really
Current read: nope
Thing I'm most excited about tomorrow: Uploading photos.
Today's extras: Stop reading this and go watch the Sopranos.'"

zygote - Google Image Search

So, I guess tonight, in a celebratory mood, is the best time to go ahead and announce this:

fuck.

..

i'm going to be a poppa, at the end of august, more or less. (August 25th.) appropriately, the start of Burning Man. (Courtnay isn't a burner, but still.)

for those of you who I didn't tell personally, i'm sorry, but it's been a struggle as to what we were going to do. and I'm not sure I could've faced all of you individually or separately or whatever.

whenever we've got an ultrasound, of course, court & i will post, but until then, thank you for your kind thoughts.
