not 'V' like the bad 1980's sci-fi, or the current bad Wachoviadaskfafdilaaaidl;lia's brothers' sci-fi.

But the aftermath. Which actually, come to think of it, the long-term's been on here. The real, 2 hours to 2 weeks afterwards of why I've fucked up, will be here. That's the real James Frey 'honest-to-god, real-no-blemishes-hidden-truth'. That should be here.

Enough 'truthiness' cynicism aside, I should put it here. Just in case one. Or something. Don't want to seem as cynical and bitter as JT.

A lot of the rest of the next day or two I’m not at liberty to describe. Let’s just say that we found that we shared more than just an intellectual connection, a fondness for SAT words and a love for independent music.

Had to call Hart and explain why I wasn’t at the Skybox for the N.C.double-A tournament semi-finals, an event which I had organized but now boged on. Basically just said that I’d explain later, but things were amazing. Called Radcliffe and explained where I was and why I didn’t pick up my luggage.

We spent the next day walking around Vancouver, and hanging out in Stanley Park, and feeling kinda giddy and amazed and full of sunshine. We bought a disposable camera and took lots of arms-extended-camera-pointed-at-faces pictures.

Talking and talking and connecting and connecting.

Just a beautiful day in every sense of the word.

We crossed the border back into America with neither incident nor illegal immigrants. Went to Radcliffe’s to pick up my stuff that spent the night at Radcliffe’s house without me. Of course, Radcliffe gave her the Radcliffe connection exam and email address request. Wanted to leave and be back alone with her.

Spent the night at her house, watched a movie, got wine and Thai food and talked and talked and talked.

The next day, I was due to fly back to Portland around 2pm. We woke up and went and got coffee. Again, the weather was on our side, too. It was a rare gorgeous NorthWest spring day. We sat outside at her neighborhood coffeshop and watched and talked and connected and observed the interesting canines in the area.

Xxxx ate just the muffin top.

Lovely, lovely, lovely, lovely.

I ended up rescheduling for the 3 pm flight. Then the 4:30, the 6, the 7:30 and then finally forced myself to keep to the 9pm last flight out. If Xxxx wasn’t so busy at work, I would’ve stayed.

If I’d known how things would turn out once away from that weekend, I would’ve found an excuse to stay.

We went to the airport and she came in with me. Since it’s post 9/11, we couldn’t go into the gate together, so we hung out at the Pyramid bar and drank beers and made googly eyes at each other and held hands.

We knew that we’d see each other the following weekend, when she was coming down to visit another friend, who had facilitated the whole thing, in a way, and a classmate from VCU Adcenter.

Finally, it was time to leave. I remember her walking away. Don’t remember what we said, but know I was beaming from ear to ear.

Got on the plane, got home and I don’t remember if I blogged or not. What do you do after a weekend that was more amazing than you had imagined?

I was exhausted and amazed and not quite sure who to share that with.

So, that’s The Story of The Crush. At least the great first part, before she freaked out (and I really helped) and we haven’t really spent more than 60 seconds talking face to face since. (not really my choice.) [addendum since i first wrote this but didn’t post: 120 minutes)]

Still the best 48 hours of 2004.

(Sigh.)

hope, hope, hope, hope.

My Yahoo!

The Story of The Crush, Act III.

Somehow, time’s flown and it’s late. We decide we’ll go to Thirteen Pennies or Coins or whatever the hell the fancy late night version of Denny’s is in Seattle. We ask the doorman on the way out where it is. He gives us vague directions. Xxxx isn’t sure either; she hasn’t really gone out much since she arrived in town. We *think* we know where to go, but it’s hard to say.

As we’re driving down Queen Anne in her Saab (nickname WaSaabi), we see a sign for the highway: I-5 South Portland, I-5 North Vancouver.

Maybe it was an idea implanted from the Polish Economist/Truck-driver/Chinese Immigrant Smuggler, but this is what Xxxx said next:

“Wanna go to Canada?”

How could I say no? (Do I ever say no? Especially to a girl?)

XXXXXXX

An hour later, and we’re only halfway to Canada.

The problem with impulsive adventures is that sometimes the impulse can wear off before the adventure really begins. A lotta time passes, no indie kids to observe and make fun of. Still, the conversation is going well.

I think we’re both expecting the other to call off this adventure. We’re both game though.

I’m 90% sure it’s a date, but that little 10% is sending out worries about humiliation and ‘getting the cheek’. BUT, we’re going to Vancouver, we don’t have a hotel room, and I’m praying that we’re “stuck” with a room that only has one bed.

110 miles can pass pretty quickly when you’re with a brilliant, gorgeous girl, even if you’re not entirely certain as to whether you’re on a date.

XXXXXXXXXX

We get to the border. I’m mostly certain that I have no drugs with me. I wonder if Xxxx has a Chinese immigrant hidden in the trunk.

The Border Mountie (snicker – Canadians are so strange) asks us for our drivers licenses.

“Where are you going?”

“Vancouver.”

“Business or pleasure?

(Pleasure. Pleasure. Pleasure. Pleasure. Say pleasure.)

“Pleasure.”

“How long will you be staying?”

Xxxx looks at me. I look at Xxxx. We both look at the Mountie.

“A day or two?” (I say it like a teenage girl unprepared for a quiz.)

The Border Mountie regards us. I wonder if she suspects we might have a family of Chinese immigrants in the trunk.

To Xxxx: “Have you been drinking?”

Xxxx: “A couple of beers a couple of hours ago.”

Mountie girl shines her flashlight on me. “And you?”

I’m too worried about the non-existent drugs and non-existent immigrants to make up a lie. “About the same.”

To Xxxx: “Get out of the car.”

Xxxx gets out of the car. The Mountie tells her to walk away from the car about 20 paces. I’m thinking this is bad, we’re going to end up having to drive back to Seattle, and the night’ll end with a hug in the Saab before I go up to Radcliffe’s. Ack.

I watch anxiously from the Mountie watch Xxxx via the Saab’s side mirror.

Xxxx walks like a champ. Well, saunters, actually. But A straight to B, nonetheless.

The Mountie: “Get back in the car.”

Xxxx does so.

The Mountie: “Have a good time.”

I’m not entirely certain, but I think the Mountie winked.

the crush, pt. ii

Post, pt. II: Date?

When Xxxx got back, she emailed me right away. I suggested since I was coming back the following week, we should meet for drinks some night. I left the invitation kinda open ended; it could’ve been a date, it could’ve been the three of us again. But, she agreed and didn’t include Monica in the plans.

We emailed back and forth the whole week – she can write like the dickens, dropping words like ‘valkyrian’ and ‘petrichor’ (lookitup!) without a second thought. Eventually, we decided to go see Stereolab and Manitoba.

We were to meet at a hip Indie bar (aren’t they all) that’s got some weird Moroccan theme to distinguish it from a hip Indie dive bar. I can’t remember the name. In my eagerness for the maybe-date, I got there 5 minutes early. Sat at the bar and tried to exude an aura of calm and cool. Maintained it for about 10 minutes. Then started to frantically checking my phone for messages and reception.

Xxxx got there 2 sips into my second beer. She explained: As she really doesn’t know Seattle, she’d gone to the wrong bar. She realized her mistake only after she’d parked and walked in. She mentioned that she passed the Showbox on the way over, and they sold the show out.

After a drink and some discussion about the Moroccan interior, we agreed to go indie kid watching at a few Capitol Hill bars and just while the night away.

Since she’s a writer, and a people watcher and generally an observer of the human condition, we went to the next place, Linda’s, which might just have the best jukebox in the world. It was packed with the skinny boys and girls with ironic t-shirts, so we had to stand at the end of the bar, by the server/bartender interaction zone.

We got a couple of drinks and then proceeded to deconstruct, snark and admire the crowd from our corner vantage point. Wondered if they were doing the same to us. (Despite my long hair and skinniness, I don’t think that I have Indie Cred.)

At some point, nature called, so I turned, took 2 steps, and was in the john. Did my business. Checked my hair. When I came out of the bathroom, my possible date was talking to the guy next to her at the bar.

The Crush Story

So, approximately, two years later, it's time for the story of The Crush.

This is only my retelling. I miss that opportunity and the feeling of hope...

apologies for the gramarrical errors:

The story of a crush

The Crush, pt. I

I had what I would call a semi-date with a girl in Seattle, but the truth is, I really had no idea if it was a date or if we were just hanging out. I’d sorta known xxxx for a while, through badass fierce friend Niki, but never really had a good chance to hang out.

She and her partner (Creative not Sapphic), the other art director Monica Taylor (Seattle) were introduced to me at my friend Niki’s housewarming party the previous September. Somehow, we’d got talking about how they didn’t know too many Seattle folk, despite living there for a while, so I invited them to the Halloween party(1st edition) in Lake Quinalt.

They came.
Monica and her bf _____ came as Montecore and Siegfried. (Side note: I missed a great opportunity to run around the bars in Portland as an animal control person. I’d have a fake tazer, fake tranquilizer darts and a real loop to put around the Montecores. I’d subdue them, and then run out of the bar.)

xxxx as Gwyneth from Seven (from the neck-up), wearing a box around her head with a fake blood slit throat. From the neck-down, she was Gwyneth from the Oscars. She pulled both off stunningly.

I thought there might have been some chemistry, but if so, it didn’t play out then, as she spent a lot of time with another guy. Lotsa glances exchanged, I thought. Or hoped. Besides, that’s when Molly and I, part II began.

Regardless, we all kept in vague touch via email after Halloween 2003, and when I went up to Seattle to freelance at Copacino, we arranged for the three of us to have lunch. Which was nice. It might’ve been the first time that I’d talked to Xxxx without alcohol. She was lovely and fascinating and intelligent. It turns out that she’s really into music – her and Monica were vacationing together to Austin for the SXSW Music Festival the following week.

(Again, it’s worth mentioning that she and Monica are creative partners.)

I was only scheduled for 2 weeks worth of freelance which was to end at the same time Xxxx was due to fly back from Austin. Luckily, though, Copacino extended me a week.

EDSBS ? UGA CRACKS DOWN ON RAMPANT TAILGATERY

If you care remotely about football this should be on your daily read list. And even if you don't give a fuck, read the ones I cite here... Note the last paragraph, especially. Not since Faulkner have we had such lyrical insight into the Southern family.

EDSBS ? UGA CRACKS DOWN ON RAMPANT TAILGATERY: "UGA, tired of seeing its pristine lawns churned into muddy flats on gameday weekends, has prohibited all access for tailgaters before 7 a.m. on gamedays. The rules change resulted largely from the damage done by fans following last year’s Auburn-UGA game; given the outcome (a last-minute nutpunch of a loss for UGA,) the university should be happy with the fact that the stadium wasn’t torn down by hand.

The inevitable result of the restrictions will be a guerilla war between UGA officials and non-RV tailgaters (who park in a designated lot starting at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Athens.) It also means more havoc for the surrounding environs in Athens, which will bear the brunt of increased parking on their lawns and total strangers firing up Webers on their lawns. (Predicting spectacular, perhaps murderous incidents involving guns and lighter fluid. Bet on it)

Though the policy makes plenty of sense in many ways, here’s one twist we don’t get, taken directly from the rules as set by the now radioactively unpopular university president Michael Adams:

The new game day operations policy calls for family-friendly tailgate zones, where alcohol is prohibited.

Alcohol-free=family friendly? Maybe in Utah, but alcohol in the south is what binds families to each other, along with will agreements, guilt, and criminal histories. It’s what allows one generation to tolerate the next, and what turns otherwise mundane, casserole-festooned family get-togethers into events you’ll remember for years…from the inside of the Grundy County jail. Most idiotically, UGA is denying alcohol consumption to those who need it most: parents. For this alone, the policy will surely become a rank disaster."

My mind was in such a swirl
I couldn't tell if you were boy or girl
True love roams, it roams where it will

24 songs that make me wanna

1. A favorite political track.
PUBLIC ENEMY - "Fight the power"

2. One of those tracks that will make you dance on the dancefloor no matter what.
BASEMENT JAXX - "Red Alert"

If the opening slapbass doesn't make you want to shake your ass then you don't have one.

3. The song you’d use to tell someone you love them.
COMMON - The Light

"There are times when you'll need someone, I will be by your side. There is a light that shines special for you and me.

Tika-da, tika-da, tikatikatik-da, I'll tell you the rest when I see you..."

Found myself singing the refrain during clean-up (ie goodbye) at Burning Man one year. But that's interpreting it as more of a friend who will stand by you no matter what may come.

4. A song you know would sell lots of VWs (or ipods, or whatever) if they paid for it. (One that hasn’t already been used).
THE GO! TEAM - "Ladyflash"

Fact: Apple tried to buy the rights and Go! Team refused. Too bad for both sides.

5. A song that forced you to sit down and analyze its lyrics.
MODEST MOUSE - 'Ocean breathes salty'

"when the ocean met the sky.

You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye.
When the earth folded on itself.
And said "Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell
are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath."
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?

The ocean breathes salty, won't you carry it in?
In your head, in your mouth, in your soul.
The more we move ahead the more we're stuck in rewind.
Well I don't mind. I don't mind. How the hell could I mind?

Well that is that and this is this.
Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed,

when the ocean met the sky.
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste the afterlife?

6. A song you like that a 2 year old would like too.
THE MUPPETS - "Manamana"

If you're reading this, you probably own one of my mix CDs with this song on it. In fact, go listen to it now and spaz out a little.

7. A song that makes you drive too fast.
MODEST MOUSE - "Float on"

Been documented here how I drove through the desert listening to this a 1000 times. Still would.

8. A song that makes you feel like kicking someone’s ass.
THE VON BONDIES - "C'mon, C'mon"

Or maybe it just makes Jack White feel like kicking someone's ass.

9. A song that both you and your grandparents (would probably) like.
Spanish side: NINO BRAVO - "Libre".

Spain's Elvis died tragically in a car wreck (is there a non-tragic way to die in a car wreck?) at age 23. Since then, one of his CDs has been a top Christmas seller every year. Mind you, he died in 1968.

'Merican side: FRANK SINATRA - "My way"

Played it on my way out the door of JSheen.

11. The song you’d send to someone you hated.
BOBBY MCFERRIN - "Don't worry; be happy"

Lull him to false complacency while I was slowly building up a grand plot to destroy his life.

More of a song for an ex-girlfriend or a song for a friend who dated your ex-girlfriend:
THE STONE ROSES - "I am the resurrection"

Turn turn, I wish you’d learn
There’s a time and place for everything I’ve got to get it through
Cut loose, you’re no use
I couldn’t stand another second in your company

Don’t waste your words I don’t need anything from you
I don’t care where you’ve been or what you plan to do

Stone me, why can’t you see
You’re a no-one nowhere washed up baby who’d look better dead."
Yep, that about sums it up.

12. A sad instrumental song that would be in the soundtrack to a movie about your life.
I don't think it exists, but a STRING QUARTET TRIBUTE of the Bauhaus version of "Bela Lugosi's Dead"

13. The peppy song that would start the opening credits in the soundtrack to a movie about your life.
The Polyphonic Spree - "Hanging around the day"

Ah, fuck. Who am I kidding? THE VERVE - "Bittersweet symphony" or MODEST MOUSE - "Float on"

14. An a cappella song.

THE SOUP DRAGONS - "I'm free"

15. A good song from a genre of music that no one could guess that you liked.
GARTH BROOKS - "Friends in low places"

I was in a southern Fraternity. Blow me.

Oh, and THE BACKSTREET BOYS - "I want it that way."
It's a great song. I won't debate this with you.

16. A song you think should have been playing when you were born.
THE VERVE - "Velvet Morning"

"And I was born a little damaged man
And look what they made.
He said, don't you find
that it's lonely, the corridor
you walked in alone.
and life is a game, you tried,
life is a game, you're tired."

Yes, I know I'm not well.

17. A favorite artist duo collaboration.
THE KLF & TAMMY WYNETTE - "Justified Ancients of Muu-Muu"

A mash-up from before there were mash-ups.

18. A favorite song that you completely disagree with (politically, morally, commonsenically, religiously etc.)
Any misogynistic, homophobic song by any rap star. Especially early 90s ones.

19. The song that you love despite the fact your IQ level drops several points every time you listen to it.
ANDREW W.K. - "Party hard"

Genius. Wonder which would look funnier to a neighbor walking by at night and looking at me in the living room spazzing out: "party hard", "manamana" or "hold me now" (by the Polyphonic Spree).

20. Your smooth song, for relaxing.
BOB MARLEY & LAURYN HILL "Turn your lights down low”

Good song for relaxing someone else, if you know what I mean.

21. A song that you like but would play loud to annoy the neighbors.
95 SOUTH - "Whoomp! There it is!"

I once saw a soccer match between Brazil and Mexico in Miami. The Brazilians didn't know the words but sang "Woooo! Na na na!"

22. A favorite song that’s about a sport or sports.
Feel like I'm revealing all of my favorite dorky, cred-stealing songs but

RICKY MARTIN - "La Copa de Vida"

23. A favorite track from an outfit considered a “super-group.”
THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS - "The bleeding heart show"

Doesn't qualify in the classic "Soupergrouper" sense, but does in indie world.

24. The song that makes you want to drink more beer.

1. Do you drink when you are happy?

2. Do you drink when you are sad or depressed?

3. Do you drink to celebrate?

4. Do you drink to forget defeats?

5. Do you drink when you're stressed?

6. Do you drink when you're relaxed?

My whole iTunes library.

New ones that I added to the Meme:
Song that makes me want to do coke:
Anything by Oasis, let's choose one though...
OASIS - "Supersonic"
OASIS - "Cigarettes and Alchohol"
OASIS - "The Hindu Times"

Song I'd put on a mixtape for a friend who was really down on life:
Tie! JAMES - "Sit down" & BETH ORTON, cover of - "Ooh Child"

Song I'd listen to on my iPod while coming home from an amazing date:
THE LA'S - "There she goes", THE DELAYS - "Hey girl"

Song that reminds me of today, 10 years ago:
MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES - "The impression that I get"

Sitting around at the Miami Ad School in the computer lab, waiting for your art director to figure out Quark.

March 17, 2006 | Issue 42•12

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND—Lead singer and guitarist for pop band Franz Ferdinand, Alexander Kapranos, is in critical condition today after being shot by a man identified as the bassist for rock group Gavrilo Princip. 'We ask fans to cooperate with Interpol to find the assailant, and call upon British Sea Power, Snow Patrol, and The Postal Service for help,' drummer Paul Thompson told music magazine NME Monday. 'The suspect had links to The Decemberists and The Libertines, and we are following up on all leads.' It is unclear whether the shooting was linked to The Polyphonic Spree's invasion of Belgium earlier this week."

NPR : Queen of the Scream: Vocal Coach Melissa Cross: "An instructional DVD/CD set called The Zen of Screaming targets a very specific clientele: singers who literally scream for a living.

Voice coach Melissa Cross, a classically trained singer and former punk rocker, has developed a method to help vocalists belt out their lyrics -- without ruining their voices. She talks to Robert Siegel about her techniques and the philosophy behind them.

Rocker Andrew W.K., best known for the raucous, good-time anthem 'It's Time to Party,' has studied with Cross for three years. He describes what he's learned from her and also talks about his newfound comfort in singing Barry Manilow songs."

Amazon.com: Our Ecstatic Days : A Novel: Books: Steve Erickson

Just started reading this. Reminds me of David Mitchell's books, but even more dreamlike and outlandish, if that's possible.

At a time, where once again, I'm dealing with what my psych is calling 'a need to mourn the loss of my birthmother', the novel's themes of primal connections lost and kept between mother and son are fucking with me, or at least focusing my focus.

Amazon.com: Our Ecstatic Days : A Novel: Books: Steve Erickson: "Readers entering the labyrinth of Our Ecstatic Days, Steve Erickson's first novel in six years, are advised to check conventional notions of reality at the door. Erickson's fiction, the best of which includes Arc D'X, Tours of the Black Clock and Rubicon Beach, has always been elusive and dreamlike, and this new book, a delirious portrait of post-millennial America, is his most extreme narrative experiment to date.

Our Ecstatic Days is a sequel of sorts to The Sea Came in at Midnight (1999), which opens with a scene in which 1,999 women and children throw themselves from a cliff into the sea below, a ritual sacrifice designed to placate the dark gods of the millennium. The intended 2000th victim, Kristin Blumenthal, escapes at the last minute and makes her way to Los Angeles, where she becomes the paid consort of a deranged 'apocalyptologist' recently deserted by his pregnant wife. Kristin, who also becomes pregnant, is the central figure in an intricate web of relationships that spans the entire novel, which becomes a haunting meditation on the chaotic nature of modern history and on those forces that help keep chaos at bay.

As the new book begins, Kristin has just given birth to a son named Kierkegaard Blumenthal, aka Kirk Blu. (Kirk's anticipated twin, a 'female shadow' whom Kristin planned to call Bront? fails to appear, having literally vanished within her mother's womb.) Parenthood transforms Kristin from a dangerously reckless spirit into a woman who is 'paralyzed' by maternal love and convinced that the universe has hostile designs on her son. Her fears assume a tangible form when a mysterious lake begins welling up from the center of Los Angeles, rising and spreading until the city becomes an archipelago of partially submerged islands. Convinced by a combination of intuition and dreams that the waters are coming for her child, she rows to a spot above the lake's source and dives in, determined to confront the forces threatening her son. When she returns to the surface just moments later, Kirk has disappeared.

From this point forward, things get even stranger. The chaos symbolized by the miraculous lake spreads across the world, and the rules governing quotidian reality break down. Formerly inanimate buildings begin to sicken and die. "Melody snakes" -- snakes made entirely of music -- infest the city. A grown-up version of the unborn Brontë emerges, fully formed but devoid of memories, from the water. The color blue disappears completely from the world. Against a backdrop of political upheaval and hallucinatory visions, Kristin mourns -- and searches for -- her son, while the interwoven tales of a varied cast of characters unfold around her. As the novel ranges backward and forward across 90 years of apocalyptic history, Erickson offers a dizzying, cumulatively affecting portrait of the "Age of Chaos," and of a nation transfigured by terror, longing and loss.

Our Ecstatic Days is an extravagant, outsized accomplishment filled with extravagant, outsized flaws... By the end, this messy, ambitious novel pulls itself together, illuminating a society in which chaos almost -- but never quite -- wins, in which primal human connections, particularly the connection between parents and children, keep us going in the face of catastrophic loss. Our Ecstatic Days is a baroque, visionary novel rooted in fundamental truths, and is well worth the considerable effort it requires."

In one of our Wells spots, a guy walks by his roommate making cereal and

gulps milk out of the carton.

During rehearsal, he was supposed to pantomime, but finished the quart of

milk. He tried to just have a small gulp the rest of the time. We brought

out this orange bucket for him to spit the milk into. By take 6 or so,

though, he was puking into it.

This is him 30 minutes after wrap. He'd spent that time in the bathroom.

Didn't stay for lunch, for some reason.

We found out afterwards that he was lactose intolerant.

Said the Gramophone: That Teenage Feeling

Download a new Neko Case track after the link.

Said the Gramophone: 342 First and Only: "342 First and Only

Neko Case - 'That Teenage Feeling'

1. This song is dedicated to the house in Ottawa that I grew up in. As Sean has obliquely hinted at in several posts, my parents just got the exciting news that after long and hard-fought careers in Canada’s public service, they will be moving to Italy where my dad will be Canada’s ambassador and my mom will be a happy consumer of Italian food and culture. I was told this week that my parents will sell the house that I grew up in, and a bit of that teenage feeling came over me. Of course, I realize that it’s just a house, just a bunch of brick and concrete, but still...

2. The way “That Teenage Feeling” starts - high up on the neck of a twelve-string guitar - it sounds like it might be the musical accompaniment to a carousel ride. The way it ends up - electric guitar violently strummed, falling in and out of time - it sounds like it might be the musical accompaniment to a carousel ride that spirals outward to infinity. The song is a glass of lemonade with the sugar so gradually drained that, by the end, you hardly realize you’re drinking pure lemon juice.

3. Whereas Nirvana managed to sound minor with major chords, Case manages to sound diminished with minor ones. This diminished quality is part of the song’s augmented quality.

4. Case sings a lot about “that teenage feeling,” but which feeling does she mean? Is she talking about anxiety? Awkwardness? Powerlessness? A sort of begrudging horniness? She answers this question by presenting us with the musical embodiment of her subject feeling at 1:53 when she moves up into her sublime high register and sings “it’s haa-aaa-haa-aaa-haaaaard” with more nostalgia than angst. The teenage feeling Case is singing about is the excitement of first love and the twilit melancholy that comes in retrospect with considering its inconsequence. She then confirms her answer as she matches that high vocal line, now skipping back and forth between two notes, with a dreamy treble run on her piano. [Buy]"

All Politics Is Thymotic - New York Times

I find this article fascinating. Good ol' Glen would've loved it.

All Politics Is Thymotic - New York Times: "All Politics Is Thymotic
By DAVID BROOKS
Let me tell you what men want. Let me tell you why some middle-age men wear the sports jerseys of semiliterate behemoths half their age while others customize their cars with so many speakers they sound like the hip-hop version of the San Francisco earthquake as they roll down the street.
Recognition. Men want others to recognize their significance. They want to feel important and part of something important.
Some people believe men are motivated by greed for money or lust for power. But money and power are means to get recognition. They are markers of success, and success makes men feel important and causes others to pay attention when they walk in the room.
Plato famously divided the soul into three parts: reason, eros (desire) and thymos (the hunger for recognition). Thymos is what motivates the best and worst things men do. It drives them to seek glory and assert themselves aggressively for noble causes. It drives them to rage if others don't recognize their worth. Sometimes it even causes them to kill over a trifle if they feel disrespected.
Plato went on to point out that people are not only sensitive about their own self-worth, they are also sensitive about the dignity of their group, and the dignity of others. If a group is denied the dignity it deserves, we call that injustice. Thymotic people mobilize to assert their group's significance if they feel they are being rendered invisible by society. Thymotic people mobilize on behalf of those made voiceless by the powerful. As Plato indicated, thymos is the psychological origin of political action.
If I had the attention of the world's politicians for one afternoo"

NPR : Elegant Spine Also a Source of Pain: "Another source of back pain is the facet joints. These are the meeting points of wing-like projections on the back of each vertebra.
'These little facet joints can act like arthritis just about anywhere in the body,' says White. 'The same way the knee joint can be painful or the hip joint can be painful, these little facet joints can be painful.'"

Dark Portrait of a 'Painter of Light' - Los Angeles Times

This LA times article started the whole Kinkade cavalcade

Dark Portrait of a 'Painter of Light' - Los Angeles Times: "It's not just Kinkade's business practices that have been called into question. Former gallery owners, ex-employees and others say his personal behavior also belies the wholesome image on which he's built his empire.

In sworn testimony and interviews, they recount incidents in which an allegedly drunken Kinkade heckled illusionists Siegfried & Roy in Las Vegas, cursed a former employee's wife who came to his aid when he fell off a barstool, and palmed a startled woman's breasts at a signing party in South Bend, Ind.

And then there is Kinkade's proclivity for 'ritual territory marking,' as he called it, which allegedly manifested itself in the late 1990s outside the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.

'This one's for you, Walt,' the artist quipped late one night as he urinated on a Winnie the Pooh figure, said Terry Sheppard, a former vice president for Kinkade's company, in an interview."

Some Sleeping Pill Users Range Far Beyond Bed - New York Times

Egads. I'm really swearing off sleeping pills now. I like the warning from Mr. Cribb, which actually closes the article.

Some Sleeping Pill Users Range Far Beyond Bed - New York Times: "Some Sleeping Pill Users Range Far Beyond Bed

By STEPHANIE SAUL
Published: March 8, 2006

With a tendency to stare zombie-like and run into stationary objects, a new species of impaired motorist is hitting the roads: the Ambien driver.

Ambien, the nation's best-selling prescription sleeping pill, is showing up with regularity as a factor in traffic arrests, sometimes involving drivers who later say they were sleep-driving and have no memory of taking the wheel after taking the drug....

....

The traffic cases around the country include that of Dwayne Cribb, a longtime probation and parole officer in Rock Hill, S.C. Mr. Cribb says he remembers nothing after taking Ambien before bed last Halloween — until he awoke in jail to learn he had left his bed and gone for a drive, smashed into a parked van and driven away before crashing into a tree. Mr. Cribb is still facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident.

A registered nurse who lives outside Denver took Ambien before going to sleep one night in January 2003. Sometime later — she says she remembers none of the episode — she got into her car wearing only a thin nightshirt in 20-degree weather, had a fender bender, urinated in the middle of an intersection, then became violent with police officers, according to her lawyer....

...

Meanwhile in South Carolina, Mr. Cribb, who has already pleaded guilty to driving under the influence, still faces a charge of leaving the scene of an accident. He says he has sworn off Ambien. "There has to be a stronger warning," he said, "about what this drug does to you."

you think Jesus Christ and Jeff Tweedy are neat, then check out their cool

Jesus Christ Mix Tape over on their blog. Although the average cool kid rock

band most likely has a song with My name in it, most don't really like Me

that much. But a lot of these songs Mocking Music picked out come pretty

darn close. This mix is just about perfect. However, if it were to be indeed

truely perfect, it would need just one more song, which I have put here for

ESPN.com: Page 2 : Curious Guy: Malcolm Gladwell

From a Sports Guy/Malcolm Gladwell(the tipping point).

This is something I obviously have a hard time with. Hope he writes a book about it...

ESPN.com: Page 2 : Curious Guy: Malcolm Gladwell: "Gladwell: This is actually a question I'm obsessed with: Why don't people work hard when it's in their best interest to do so? Why does Eddy Curry come to camp every year overweight?
The (short) answer is that it's really risky to work hard, because then if you fail you can no longer say that you failed because you didn't work hard. It's a form of self-protection. I swear that's why Mickelson has that almost absurdly calm demeanor. If he loses, he can always say: Well, I could have practiced more, and maybe next year I will and I'll win then. When Tiger loses, what does he tell himself? He worked as hard as he possibly could. He prepared like no one else in the game and he still lost. That has to be devastating, and dealing with that kind of conclusion takes a very special and rare kind of resilience. Most of the psychological research on this is focused on why some kids don't study for tests -- which is a much more serious version of the same problem. If you get drunk the night before an exam instead of studying and you fail, then the problem is that you got drunk. If you do study and you fail, the problem is that you're stupid -- and stupid, for a student, is a death sentence. The point is that it is far more psychologically dangerous and difficult to prepare for a task than not to prepare. People think that Tiger is tougher than Mickelson because he works harder. Wrong: Tiger is tougher than Mickelson and because of that he works harder. "

Arts Unlimited | Film & Music | 'Born Slippy was a greyhound we bet on'

C0ol article on the origins of some cool British songs.

Arts Unlimited | Film & Music | 'Born Slippy was a greyhound we bet on': "Kaiser Chiefs - I Predict a Riot
UK chart position: #22, November 2004; #9, September 2005

Nick Hodgson (drummer, Kaiser Chiefs): I used to DJ with my friend Nick at the Cockpit in Leeds. We'd drive home past a big nightclub and there were always lots of police and people fighting. I went home and wrote the riff on the piano and started singing some words. It says: 'A friend of a friend, he got beaten.' That was a friend of Nick the DJ. At our club night, Pigs, we had a band on, Black Wire. They were going mad and so were the crowd. You could see the bouncers moving in and I said to the club's boss, 'I predict a riot.'"

The Fragile Army (the polyphonic spree blog)

excitedexcitedexcitedexcitedexcited

The Fragile Army: "Dude-wise we have the 'Kackletaps': Tim (our fearless leader, who has written some of the most important and moving lyrics I've ever heard?€?just you wait), John (the mad scientist behind the board who's led us to this amazing studio), and Evan (our keyboard player, who has such a great vocal range and a head full of so many ideas he might explode that we couldn't leave him behind).

The songs are unbelievable & wildly passionate. I can't wait for people to hear them. We're trying to get two songs done a day but the first day was a little shaky as most of us stayed up too late and danced too long the night before. The last two days have been super-productive (except for the pizza comas). We've been fueled by ridiculous amounts of coffee and therefore have been brainstorming and experimenting like crazy - executing parts that don't even sound like a choir. Well that's all for now - Roy Orbison in the house and I'm needing some more java joe.
