The Sun Online - News: Dog pee caused mass blackout: "Dog pee caused mass blackout

SHOCKED Gary Davies saw his dog erupt in flames — after it peed on a live power cable.

Bailey the Staffordshire bull terrier also cut power to 148 homes by cocking a leg against a faulty pylon.

Gary, 42, said: “There was an almighty explosion and the whole street lit up. I turned round and the dog was on fire.”

Power was off for five hours in Middlestone Moor, Co Durham.

Last night Bailey was recovering at home after being treated for burns."

It's like a mirage, where heat causes the bending of light rays and cloaks the road ahead behind an image of the sky.

ASCAP busts Imbibe

Urban Wineworks, Radcliffe next on ASCAP's lawsuits of restaurants having musicians play cover versions.

OregonLive.com : Everything Oregon: " Restaurant owner says songs may cost him his business

Posted by The Oregonian Newsroom October 9, 2006 10:42
Print | Email

A performance of the Jimi Hendrix classic, 'The Wind Cries Mary,' may cost Michael Dorr his restaurant.

Dorr, the 37-year-old owner of Imbibe on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard, has been slapped with a federal lawsuit by companies that own the rights to a trio of popular classics that were performed at Dorr's restaurant in 2005.

The songs at the center of the suit?

Other than the Hendrix song, the music companies say Stevie Wonder's 'That Girl,' and a 1971 tune, 'Slippin' into Darkness.'

Dorr says a rep from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers paid an unannounced visit to his restaurant one night and heard covers of the songs performed by local band 'Black Notes.'

Because his place features local musicians and covers are rare, he didn't think he had to pay the musicians and publishers group an estimated $2,000 to cover performances of copyrighted tunes.

But the owners of the songs, including Wonder and Hendrix's estate, say he does.

Now they're suing Dorr for copyright infringement - and they're seeking payment of between $750 and $30,000 for each song, along with attorney fees.

'It's basically going to bankrupt me and put me out of business,' Dorr said this morning. 'I can't afford the lawyer and the fees. It's going to close me down.'

The married father of two, who opened Imbibe a couple of years ago, said bands typically start playing after 10. But after Friday, the restaurant will do without live music because of the lawsuit.

'It's a total bummer,' he said. 'It's scary for me and my family. The restaurant business is hard and on top of other things, business is slow. This is the icing on the cake."

The Energy Mandate - New York Times

Energy independence matters to me. I hope it matters to you.

Glad to hear my favorite Cajun taking it seriously, and finding the country is taking it seriously too.

The Energy Mandate - New York Times: "The Energy Mandate

By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN

James Carville, the legendary Clinton campaign adviser who coined the slogan, “It’s the economy, stupid,” knows a gut issue when he sees one. So when Mr. Carville contacted me the other day to tell me about the newest gut issue his polling was turning up for candidates in the 2006 elections, I was all ears.

“Energy independence,” he said. “It’s now the No. 1 national security issue. ... It’s become kind of a joke with us, because no matter how we ask the question, that’s what comes up.”

So, for instance, the Democracy Corps, a Democratic strategy group spearheaded by Mr. Carville and the former Clinton pollster Stan Greenberg, asked the following question in an Aug. 27 survey of likely voters: “Which of the following would you say should be the two most important national security priorities for the administration and Congress over the next few years?”

Coming in No. 1, with 42 percent, was “reducing dependence on foreign oil.” Coming in a distant second at 26 percent was “combating terrorism.” Coming in third at 25 percent was “the war in Iraq,” and tied at 21 percent were “securing our ports, nuclear plants and chemical factories” and “addressing dangerous countries like Iran and North Korea.” “Strengthening America’s military” drew 12 percent. Mr. Carville also noted that because their polls are of “likely voters,” they have a slight Republican bias — i.e., they aren’t just polling a bunch of liberal greens.

Best movie songs, best music moments in film, best songs in a movie, best movie soundtrack

Fun debate...

Best movie songs, best music moments in film, best songs in a movie, best movie soundtrack: "Movie Tunes: The Top 40 music moments in film history

10/06/2006

ALSO: What are your favorite music-in-movie moments? Post your thoughts at Premium Hollywood and Eat Sleep Drink Music.

There’s nothing better for someone who’s a fan of both music and movies to sit down in a theater, watch a film, and find yourself in awe of how the director has utilized a pop song to set a scene or convey a mood. It’s easy to know that you need a romantic song for a romantic moment, but finding the right song…? That’s the hard bit, and it gets even harder as you have to provide the proper sonic backdrop for just about every key moment in the film. Bullz-Eye polled all of our movie and music writers (and then some) to get their favorite uses of pop songs in movies.

The only real criteria we set was this: The song couldn’t have been written specifically for the film or have made its debut on the film’s soundtrack. This was pretty rough on us at first, because it meant we had to say so long to Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” (“The Breakfast Club”), bid bye-bye to O.M.D.’s “If You Leave” (“Pretty in Pink”), and offer a fond farewell to Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” (“She’s Having a Baby”).

Fortunately, we had a lot of great songs – and movie moments – waiting in the wings. But be advised: our descriptions contain spoilers galore."

Waterfall (Oakenfeld remix)

Not much done to the original (off The Stone Roses, 1989) other than beef up the dancey 'vibe' without taking away the 'guitars'.

It makes me think of going on an adventure in the tropical rainforest, and then our raft takes a turn in the river and we're back into semi-civilization, Brazilian girls and beer and music and dancing like mad until the dawn.

Now playing at your bar mitzvah

I never had a bar mitzvah.

Let's say I threw one now, and Uncle Morty gave me a $100k for the entertainment and demanded receipts (ie no hookers'n'blow).

We, the professional planners (do they have unions for that?) and I would then consult this handy Clear Channel list to see how far our money would go.

Thinking of acts that wouldn't get my nana's panties either in a) a bunch or (wait for it) b) sopping wet, I think my line-up goes like this:

G-Love: 30k (decent act, good multi-generational party vibe)
Sarah Silverman: 35k (she's tribe, in case you forgot. expect a discount. wait, nevermind. contradiction in stereotypes)
Torn about the rest.

Feel free to leave your line-up in the comments section. Not that anyone does that here. Why the apathy, playas? Tell me what I could change about me to make you like me more. (Editor hands me copy of Your Audience Is Just Not That Into You and Your Blog (simon & schuster 2006)).

Sigh. Off to fantasize about my bar mitzvah.

Hot Chicks with Douchebags Haiku

You really need to jump the link to see the picture to get a sense of this.

(Side note: based on our reader survey poll, we're trying to add more ADD-type randomness to the posts here on AgainAgain. Expect more, and less, nonsense in the weeks ahead.)

Hot Chicks with Douchebags: "Winning HCwD Haiku: D Lee Hakumasa

There were a bunch of solid entries in the haiku contest, but I gotta go with the straight and to-the-point ethos of D Lee Haikumasa's simple, yet oh so emotionally touching, entry:

oh lovely lady
why choose a douchebag boyfriend?
my penis sheds tears

-- D Lee Haikumasa

And honorable mention to Jem for engaging the always popular sapphic angle:

I may be a girl
But I would still smash this guy
Then lick her on her...

The wrongness of the unholy communion between a sexy lithe gazelle like this hot shiny gold belted hottie and this uber-douche can sometimes be better expressed through ancient Japanese arts.

Donations near $50,000 for McElrathbays

Clemson freshman football player Ray Ray McElrathbey obtained custody of his 11-year-old brother Fahmarr this summer to keep him away from a drug-addled mother.

However, arcane NCAA rules prevented him from being able to accept help from coaches and alumni in the care for his brother, including gifts, child care or even rides.

from September 5th: "While many in the athletic department have asked to help the McElrathbeys, Clemson must be careful the help is not seen as extra benefits in violation of NCAA rules. Clemson and the ACC have worked on a waiver request to the NCAA, athletic spokesman Tim Bourret said.

(Coach) Koenning doesn't understand why his wife or other members of Clemson's coaching family can't assist with a trip to the grocery store or school. "I can take two boxes of toys out of my basement and give them to Goodwill, but I can't give them to Ray Ray?"

However, in a rare example of humanity, the NCAA did eventually grant a waiver so that a fund could be set up to help both brothers, and so that the coaches and their wives could help care for Fahmarr.

Chicken soup for the football soul in 5,4,3,2, 1...

The State | 10/03/2006 | Donations near $50,000 for McElrathbays: "CLEMSON — Almost $50,000 has been raised in two weeks to help redshirt freshman Ray Ray McElrathbey raise his 11-year-old brother, Fahmarr.

Bill Harley, senior vice president of First Citizens Bank in Clemson, said the trust fund established to assist McElrathbey has drawn contributions from around the world.

Nearly 400 checks have been contributed, with donations coming from a diverse group of sources including an unspecified NBA player who went to an ACC school but has no Clemson ties; a U.S. soldier stationed in Germany, also without Clemson ties; the manager of the rock group REM; and a young girl who stapled her weekly $1 allowance to her parents’ check.

“I don’t think anybody had any reference for what people were going to do,” Harley said.

Chris Olson, an attorney in Clemson, has stored contributions in an escrow account until paperwork setting up the trust fund’s dispersal details are finalized, which could happen as early as this week.

The account totals $48,619."

Gator Football News @ Gatorzone.com

Hard to believe that this will mark the halfway point of the regular college football season. Time keeps on slippin'...

For those of you who give a damn about football, the article goes on to show that UF is the #1 school for GameDay to visit.

Gator Football News @ Gatorzone.com: "Gainesville, FL

ESPN announced on Sunday that its College GameDay show will emanate from Ben Hill Griffin Stadium this weekend, the site of the Florida-LSU game in The Swamp. The fifth-ranked Gators (5-0/3-0 SEC) and the ninth-ranked Tigers (4-1/1-1 SEC) will meet at 3:30 p.m. on CBS Sports.

Florida will be making its 22nd appearance on GameDay, a figure that leads the nation. The Gators are 13-8 (.619) when they are featured in the on-site game and will be making their first appearance on the program since Oct. 29, 2005, a 14-10 victory over Georgia in Jacksonville. This will be the program's first appearance in Gainesville since Nov. 29, 2003, for the annual matchup against Florida State."

Free Hugs: The Virus of Connection | Personal Democracy Forum

Well thought out blog posting, connecting the "Free Hugs" campaign to, well, political campaigning.

(HT: anonymous commenter. Someone with a jouranlist colleague. Orange?)

One final thought. Who would be the *most* awkward politician to try and pull this stunt. Besides, The Veep of Darkness. Santorum? Allen? ('Come and give me some sugar, ya little macaca, you.')

Free Hugs: The Virus of Connection | Personal Democracy Forum: "Free Hugs' also hits our consciousness at a time when we are being carpet-bombed daily with messages of fear and disconnection. That guy in the shopping mall with a backpack? He might be a terrorist. Report suspicious activity, the signs say everywhere (at least in New York, where I live). Surrender your personal items before boarding a plane. A full-body pat-down by the TSA doesn't do much for my emotional state. I'm not much of a Jungian analyst, but the human need for connection doesn't go away, even in times like these.

Now, when you think of politics today, does any of it inspire you to be hopeful? Right now, the messages I'm absorbing are either about fear (and the need to trust the President to protect us) or about anger (and the need to stop the President from making things even worse. As a woman who was at the Demos talk I did yesterday with Allison Fine noted, we're mostly seeing activists using the new technology to shout even more loudly at each other, rather than figure out how to bridge differences and solve problems. None of the 2008 contenders are doing much to convey hope about the future.

Which is why I think it would be really smart for some politician to embrace the 'Free Hugs' campaign right now. C'mon, John and Elizabeth, go stand in a shopping mall in North Carolina with a 'Free Hugs' and get a volunteer to tape you! How about it Hillary? Mark? Do they dare? If you're really for 'One America' that goes 'Forward Together,' why not?"
