Florida DB Munroe Charged With Theft

If you've ever had a run-in with your UPD parking enforcement(in other words, if you attended college), then you'll be inclined to view young Dorian as more of a modern day Turk 182 than a common criminal.

Florida DB Munroe Charged With Theft: "DESTIN — University of Florida safety Dorian Munroe was arrested last week and charged with theft after Munroe admitted to a UF police officer that he had removed a UPD ''boot'' from one of his tires and placed it in his trunk.

Munroe was charged with a third-degree felony, according to a police report, because the boot was valued at $385. UF's police department places the boots on vehicles whose owners either have three or more outstanding parking tickets or five guilty citations within a year.

According to the report, Munroe was called to UPD headquarters on May 22. There, according to the report, Munroe told officer Brian Boyd that he had taken the boot off his 1987 Mercedes. The boot was removed from Munroe's trunk, and Munroe was arrested and transported to Alachua County jail. He was released Wednesday.

UF athletic department spokesman Steve McClain said Tuesday that Gators coach Urban Meyer is aware of the incident and that there is an internal process in place to handle such matters. Munroe, a rising sophomore from Miami, is expected to compete for significant playing time this season.

''Dorian is a heck of a kid,'' Meyer said. ''It'll come out.''"

Halo 3 Arrives September 25 - A E Interactive: Your Bay Area hangout for gaming, music, movies, culture -

Let's go ahead and schedule a day off on September 25th.

Halo 3 Arrives September 25 - A E Interactive: Your Bay Area hangout for gaming, music, movies, culture -: "I got a call from Shane Kim today. He didn’t even know I posted our interview already. But he did have some news to break: Sept. 25. That is the day that Halo 3 will go on sale in the U.S. and in many parts of the world. It will go on sale a day later in Europe. With such an early release date, Bungie is certainly doing its best to help Microsoft win the console war.

“I’m convinced it will be one of the biggest entertainment events of the year,” Kim said. “I had a great time with Halo 2 and know what impact that had as a cultural event. I expect Halo 3 to be even bigger.”"

OPmP3: Italian Go! Team edition

From an italian blog called inkiostro, the new Go! Team single.

Initial reaction: not as great as say, Ladyflash.

Second reaction: I am humming this in the elevator.

Third reaction: infectious.

inkiostro: "Ci piacevano un sacco, i Go! Team. Rassicurante, gi.

The Sopranos: Tony's going to hell. - By Jeffrey Goldberg, Timothy Noah, and Brian Williams - Slate Magazine

I'd like to go out to the middle of the desert, take peyote and have sex with a super hot chick.

So, here's the invite to Tony Soprano to join disorient this coming year. He's what? Fictional?

Think they ran the end credits with a Calexico song.

The Sopranos: Tony's going to hell. - By Jeffrey Goldberg, Timothy Noah, and Brian Williams - Slate Magazine: "Tony, who spends his life being comfortably numb about the reality of what he does for a living, can't in this instance abide the hypocrisy of pretending that Christopher died in the accident and that he's sorry Christopher is gone. He escapes to Las Vegas and looks up Sonya, an old girlfriend of Christopher's who's working her way through college as a stripper. (I assume Sonya figured in the show a few seasons back, but I don't remember her. Do you?) They have sex, and then Sonya introduces Tony to peyote. At first it makes him puke, but later they wander, high, into a casino, and Tony soon finds himself winning at the roulette wheel. His streak of bad luck is over, he realizes; killing Christopher ended it. Remember how Tony told Carmela a few episodes back that he was fated to survive Uncle Junior's shooting? The peyote deepens that delusion. The episode ends with Tony and Sonya in the desert, Tony shouting, 'I get it.' Mario Puzo meets Carlos Castenada.

Tony is good and comfortable with his numbness now. Drugs made Christopher weak, but they make Tony strong. Christopher was a loser, Tony is a winner. This goombah is headed for some kind of serious fall, don't you think?"

current work: "Running the Numbers
An American Self-Portrait

This new series looks at contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Each image portrays a specific quantity of something: fifteen million sheets of office paper (five minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (thirty seconds of can consumption) and so on. My hope is that images representing these quantities might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books. Statistics can feel abstract and anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 426,000 cell phones retired every day. This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs.

My only caveat about this series is that the prints must be seen in person to be experienced the way they are intended. As with any large artwork, their scale carries a vital part of their substance which is lost in these little web images. Hopefully the JPEGs displayed here might be enough to arouse your curiosity to attend an exhibition, or to arrange one if you are in a position to do so. The series is still in its early stages, and new images will be posted as they are completed, so please stay tuned.

The Pirate Queen.About a minute after my travel book, The Pirate Queen: In Search of Grace O'Malley and Other Legendary Women of the Sea, hit bookstores three years ago, I began to get mail from swashbuckling readers craving more about pirates.

I'd written about my travels around the North Atlantic looking for stories of women and the sea. Although there were several chapters about 16th-century sea captain Grace O'Malley, there were also less-glamorous stories of Orkney herring lassies and Icelandic fishers. My publishers and I had changed the title to pump up the sales reps: 'Everybody loves the idea of women pirates,' said marketing. But I also felt that Grace O'Malley was a wonderful role model for any woman who's ever dreamed of running away to sea."

The Five-Second Rule Explored, or How Dirty Is That Bologna? - New York Times

Goddamn, but it's science!

I think the studies where they put say, salmonella or e. coli on a surface before dropping something on it really kinda ruin the study.

Seriously, what are the chances that I've got some salmonella sitting on my car seat?

Accompanied by six graphs, two tables and equations whose terms include “bologna” and “carpet,” it’s a thorough microbiological study of the five-second rule: the idea that if you pick up a dropped piece of food before you can count to five, it’s O.K. to eat it."

He got away.

The Aussie ‘Big Dry’

By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
Published: May 4, 2007

SYDNEY, Australia

Almost everywhere you travel these days, people are talking about their weather — and how it has changed. Nowhere have I found this more true, though, than in Australia, where “the big dry,” a six-year record drought, has parched the Aussie breadbasket so severely that on April 19, Prime Minister John Howard actually asked the whole country to pray for rain. “I told people you have to pray for rain,” Mr. Howard remarked to me, adding, “I said it without a hint of irony.”

And here’s what’s really funny: It actually started to rain! But not enough, which is one reason Australia is about to have its first election in which climate change will be a top issue. In just 12 months, climate change has gone from being a nonissue here to being one that could tip the vote.

Randall Tobias, the abstinence-only advocate, hires escort service!

From Slate, news that conservatives tend to be hypocrites. Starting to be a dog-bites-man story, isn't it?

RandallTobias, the abstinence-only advocate, hires escort service! - By Timothy Noah - Slate Magazine: "ABC News and the Washington Post are reporting that Deputy Secretary of State Randall Tobias resigned April 27 after confirming to ABC News that he's on Jeane Palfrey's little list. Palfrey is a D.C. madam under prosecution who's been receiving, through her attorney, phone calls from lawyers for various prominent johns begging her not to make their clients' names public. Tobias is administrator of the State Department's foreign aid programs.

Tobias' resignation was announced at 5 p.m. on a Friday, traditionally the hour for releasing bad news, because reporters are busy making weekend plans, and readers, at least in theory, pay less attention to news that comes out on a Saturday. The strategy seems to have worked in this instance, because neither ABC News nor the Post reported one highly relevant detail: Tobias is the Bush administration's leading advocate of abstinence-only programs abroad!"
