vain, selfish & lazy: dancing just as good as he walks.

vain, selfish & lazy: dancing just as good as he walks.: "richard ashcroft - 'break the night with colour' (from the keys to the world lp, import available for preorder here.)

in brief : normally, i'd post this sort of thing in the morning; this though is a (good) radio rip, so caveat auditor.

one has to wonder if this is a historical moment for richard ashcroft. it's been three years since human conditions, not an album that left most w/ bated breath, but his performance of 'bittersweet symphony' w/ coldplay was a highlight of live8, and now he'll be touring w/ the band, whose lead singer proclaimed him the greatest songwriter ever and lord of all he surveys. and he's v. optimistic about this record, the best stuff he's ever recorded and such. but, then again, he's always v. optimistic about his records, isn't he? not one to say something like, 'the album's shit, but i've become accustomed to a certain lifestyle.'

based on 'break the night with colour,' i'm a little dubious. the familiar, comforting tropes are there; richard is still something of a lone seeker of truth, a solitary man. the track, though, sounds suspiciously like 'boulevard of broken dreams,' only w/ harpsichord. ashcroft, for his part, sounds more and more like neil diamond w/ the passing of the years. who better, though, to take up the role of the solitary man--'lord i've been trying' from the last record was pure beautiful noise--which might explain why the whole band thing didn't work out.

what he doesn't have here--and, if you think about it, he's never really had it--is neil's sense of chorus. what 'break the night with color' does have is a nagging 'oooh, oooh,' an insidious little hook that burrows deeper w/ each listen. hardly the thing to build a comeback on, especially when one recalls how his best records had at least five or so different hooks. i still want to believe, and i'm sure i'll find something on the album, but i didn't find what i was looking for here."

Random quote idea

For some reason, whilst driving around 72 and sunny Los Angeles this morning, the following quote occurred to me. I think it would be funny for Pedro to say it.

Paraphrasing Casablanca:

Pedro, "Of all the taco joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine."

In other news, I'm still mulling over mp3 blog names. And ideas. I don't want to have a music geek's blog for music geeks. I want to introduce great songs to my friends, and I don't care if the
blogosphere' has or has not embraced the band. It doesn't matter if my mp3s are 'cool'.

But I do want the site to have some kind of hook.

Who out there got a 'Fly Away' OST back in 1999? If you didn't this is what i did. Cue: Flashback:

Back when burning CDs was a really new thing, I decided to make a Pulp Fiction-like soundtrack complete with quotes from the movie. The movie was 'Fly Away'. Of course, there was no 'Fly Away' movie. So, I just randomly made up my own quotes and had friends record them. (Best quote is a tie between Dave Emmitte's drawl heavy, "I'll fight for her til hell freezes over, and then I'll fight on ice" and our Japanese foreign ad exchange guy, Taichi, saying, "Don't pick at your wounded soul.")

I'm thinking of adding similar quotes to the front or back of the mp3s I put up. Or combine a pre-existing quote with a song. Back in mix-*tape* days, I made a mixtape with the Pulp Fiction quote, "Great vengeance and furious anger, those ..." in front of the Stone Roses' "Love Spreads". Sounded like they were made for each other.

Off to the Gator-Criminoles game at the local bar/cafe.

New Richard Ashcroft single

So much more interesting to say, "New Verve single".

But it's always a good sign to have Mad Richard dishing platitudes and Big Questions when I'm trying to make things better.

Heard it yesterday. It's still a bit of overproduced Post-Sting mush. Still stirs the heartstrings though. I just am looking forward to a downloadable acoustic version.

Downloadable post soon.

Richard Ashcroft *Unofficial*: "New track revealed by Q Magazine
Q magazine have listed a new track from Richard's forthcoming 2006 album as one of it's recommended download tracks in December's issue. The track, entitled 'Keys To The World' has been given the thumbs up from Q, which in the past has not been particularly complimentary. The quote is as follows:

'He's leaner, meaner and has relocated his soul. This taster from next year's new album suggests the ex-Verve frontman will soon be on the rise again.' "

God Angrily Clarifies 'Don't Kill' Rule
September 26, 2001 | Issue 37•34

NEW YORK—Responding to recent events on Earth, God, the omniscient creator-deity worshipped by billions of followers of various faiths for more than 6,000 years, angrily clarified His longtime stance against humans killing each other Monday.

God.
"Look, I don't know, maybe I haven't made myself completely clear, so for the record, here it is again," said the Lord, His divine face betraying visible emotion during a press conference near the site of the fallen Twin Towers. "Somehow, people keep coming up with the idea that I want them to kill their neighbor. Well, I don't. And to be honest, I'm really getting sick and tired of it. Get it straight. Not only do I not want anybody to kill anyone, but I specifically commanded you not to, in really simple terms that anybody ought to be able to understand."

Worshipped by Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike, God said His name has been invoked countless times over the centuries as a reason to kill in what He called "an unending cycle of violence."

"I don't care how holy somebody claims to be," God said. "If a person tells you it's My will that they kill someone, they're wrong. Got it? I don't care what religion you are, or who you think your enemy is, here it is one more time: No killing, in My name or anyone else's, ever again."

SFGate: Culture Blog!

SFGate: Culture Blog!: "Sniff The Greatest Sex Drug... Ever

Now in Phase 3 clinical trials, which is the phase just before final FDA approval and the phase just before it starts appearing on a million semi-legal medical websites and just before it becomes THE must-have club drug of your life and before it shows up in every woman's purse and every man's coat pocket, is a new and potentially world-altering aphrodesiac.
One sniff, and this could be you

One sniff, and this could be you. Or, you know, your wife

It is the nasal spray to end all nasal sprays, a new and apparently hugely effective brain-stroking libido-licking sex-drive-boosting drug called PT-141 which, if approved and if even half as effective as some of the amazing human trials indicate, will revolutionize sex in a way Viagra could only wet dream and which Ecstasy can only knowingly wink at and which cocaine and cocktails and overpriced sports cars will only deeply envy forevermore.
Farewell?

Still good, but you can't sniff it

It works for both men and women. It is unaffected by food or alcohol. It is non-addictive, easy to use, has no serious physical side effects. It works by opening/stimulating/grinding against the same channels in the brain (as opposed to the bloodstream, like Viagra) that fire up when you get turned on. It is not Ecstasy, but it certainly could supplant it as the club drug of the new millennium. And it will be here in about three years.

Basically, it makes you horny. Really horny. Take-your- clothes-off-right-now-and-do-me horny. It is direct. Straight to the brain. Bypasses the mating ritual and bypasses those numbing $100 dinners and bypasses the all your annoying complex psychoemotional issues and all the lessons you might need to learn about your sexuality and zips right by the awkwardness of taking your pants off in front of someone new for the first time and makes you wanna get down to it like, right now. Apparently.

Very good -- if lengthy and a bit rambly -- piece in New York magazine about the joys and evils to, uh, come, as a result of PT-141's imminent legalization. It is, after all, the cheap, easy-to-use, hassle-free sex drug everyone's been waiting for. It is nirvana, the magic bullet, the simplest route to quickie sex you've ever known. It could be the greatest thing to happen to sex in 50 years. And also, of course, the worst.

Makes you want to try it, no?"

Authorities Crack Down on NYC Poker Clubs - Yahoo! News: "Authorities Crack Down on NYC Poker Clubs

NEW YORK - On a busy night at the New York Players Club in upper Manhattan, vice squad officers wearing bulletproof vests and raid jackets dealt the underground poker scene a losing hand.

The team entered unannounced at 11 p.m., detaining dealers, snatching up piles of cash and sending dozens of card players home with empty pockets. Downtown, another popular card club, Playstation, also was shuttered. In all, police arrested 39 employees and confiscated $100,000."

A mp3 blogger writes about why she does it.

Lene - It's Your Duty (Shake Your Booty) - PopText: "
‘What’s the point of this?’ I get asked. ‘What’s the end result?’ The thing is, I’m not sure there is one. I don’t take ad money; I don’t tend to post what the labels want me to. Aside from the accidental odd freelance gig I’ve been approached for, this place is entirely about the mission of pop: the pleasure I get from knowing I’ve just introduced an amazing song into somebody’s life, despite the fact they may want to write off the entire genre wholesale out of misguided principle.

That isn’t to be underestimated. There are people – a hell of a lot of people – who don’t know who Robyn is. Haven’t heard Rachel Stevens’ album tracks. Wouldn’t recognise a Clor song; or refuse to listen out of a notion that mainstream pop is nothing but a genre of Westlife crap. Sure, they aren’t the majority of you reading; you are the fluxogram early-adopters. But finding it is half the battle – Petridis went in search and all he found was Pitchfork and MySpace. The hot party is harder to find, but worth the search. This is the good stuff – the joyful, transient moments that enrich and inspire me. I think about how much this music has brought to my life, just by being there to soundtrack my existence – and I don’t even listen to the pop for most of the time. Pushing these songs out into the ether is for my personal satisfaction alone. Never heard that Broken Social Scene before I posted it? Derive even the tiniest amount of pleasure from it? Then my work is kind of done.

Take Lene. She should be known – after all, there was Aqua. There was writing the masterpiece of 'No Good Advice'. There was a video with neon and secretaries and red leather. But no, her songs languish in the forgotten realms of pop, even magnificence such as this. Oh, relish with which she smirks! The thrust and slow drive of purpose and flippant pointlessness! So… She’s my gift to you today. And you probably won’t be changed forever by these four minutes, but maybe the song I post tomorrow will do it."

Expectations raised. Disappointment, anti-socialism ensue.

Confused, frustrated, depressed, angry, horny, pt. I Or just another Saturday night in Venice.

A few things driving the agenda right now: First, tired from 3 straight nights out and waking up at 8 am to go watch the Gators play at the local sports bar. (Also, the Gators lost to our former Head Ball Coach, the beloved Steve Spurrier).

Last night was the Big Brothers Big Sis 50th Anniversary gala. We were premiering our commercial there. I'll be posting it in mpg form sometime over the next week or two.
I was expecting to receive a standing ovation or some real love for the spot. Instead, Pam introduces the spot, and it's met with... polite applause. Really, I don't think anyone was really paying all that close attention.

After they showed it, Pam effusively praised everyone from Boxer and our agency, and had them shine the spotlight on us and have us stand up.

But it wasn't enough. One of the things I'm working on and paying attention to is my ability to raise expectations/hope and then be really affected by the disappointment. Worse still, the disappointment and depression gang up and put me in an even worse mood.

So, after that, I just got angry and didn't want to really go out or participate or wait around for everyone so that we could hit the hotel bar. The black storm cloud was remarkably apparent to everyone involved.

Ducked out quickly and drove over to the Roosevelt hotel where some of the fun girls from the Yacht Cruise were throwing a party. I couldn't handle being out there, either. Also, because I knew that I had to get up early to watch the Gator game, I had to take it easy. So I stayed for 30 minutes and then busted home.

The good news was that I didn't stop and get a bottle of wine on the way home.

But the end result is that last night I was just in an angry, anti-social mood because I didn't get the ego stroke that I was hoping for. Expectations overraised leads to disappointment leads to crappy mood. More soon.

About the journals

Book Journals

It should be noted that EACH JOURNAL IS UNIQUE, as in one of a kind. they

are all made from recycled book covers and because of it each one is a

different size. but please know that we do our best to only put up journals

that are of an average or reasonable size. if you have questions about how

big a journal is please email me, i'd love to give you more information.

the journals are filled with about 75 sheets of 24/60#, acid free, BLANK

paper, which is a nice journaling or sketching paper. inside the front cover

and throughout every book we retain any beautiful cover pages,

illustrations, library cards, maps, inscriptions, or what-have-you found in

the book (we find all kinds of beautiful stuff in these old books). and it's

all held together with a black plastic spiral.

Tulane & Navy

SI.com - Writers - Rocky bottom (cont.) - Friday November 4, 2005 1:03AM: "Beyond the BCS
Tulane's trip to Navy on Saturday will be on the house -- literally. The academy increased the Green Wave's guarantee for the road game by $50,000 to nearly $125,000 and paid it in advance to cover airfare, hotel rooms and ground transportation. Tulane students will be admitted free and players will receive goody bags full of food, beverages and amenities, such as toilet paper. ... Northern Illinois' Garrett Wolfe, fourth in the nation in rushing at 142.7 yards a game, will sit out his third straight game with a severely sprained left knee, missing Saturday's clash at Central Michigan. But the Husky's star should be ready for their next game, a Nov. 16 trip to rival Toledo."
