Not sure if I blogged it, but another NYTimes article a while back described the two archetypes of America, 'The Gambler' and 'The Achiever.'

The Best Choice (washingtonpost.com): "American values were 'equality' and 'achievement.' Americans want a level playing field and don't like people who put on airs. But they also admire strivers.
